The other part of the process that is just crucial and has been because it’s been about a year and a half since I added my associate to my office, is the follow-up. And again, I mentioned these other companies that I’d worked for, none of them had this hands-on approach after the fact to help guide through the associate period and then potentially bring on the doctor as a partner doc or in some way, shape or form, an owner, after the process is done. So, having that resource as I brought the associate in and been able to train them and work towards that partnership has just been crucial. So, I would say those are the two biggest factors that have really made this process I would say fairly easy. And again, I will stress, you get what you pay for.

I will also say that it has been the best money I could have spent in the long run. There’s the old adage in life “You pay for what you get”.

Bob, he worked me and integrated me and my feelings and thoughts right into the equation because essentially who I hired was up to me. And he was really good at helping me figure out who are you trying to find. Let’s put dental skills aside, what is the type of person you want and can trust with your patients? So, we took that approach first and foremost so we really listed out all the attributes of the type of person I’m looking for, which as an owner and every single patient that’s walked in this door, they mind, they are my patients and I care for them and I want the best for them. So, to bring somebody else in as a clinical partner, that’s really giving the reins to somebody that you have to trust. And so, with the criteria that Bob and I helped put together, we knew if instead of trying to and he explained this to me a few times which I really appreciated, if you have two people who apply, instead of weighing them against each other, all you’re doing is weighing them against your criteria. And that’s all we did from the beginning. And thankfully, I didn’t have to take a lot of time out of my own time invested in looking through the CVs and resumes and trying to look who these people work. Bob did all that vetting for me. It was awesome to hear him come forward and say “I think I’ve got a candidate for you that we want to bring in an interview”. And as soon as he told me that this person checked off all of those boxes that we had set as criteria, I knew I found a good associate.

I think for any practitioner, any owner listening to this, they probably have the same fears that I had going into this because like I said, I was in denial for a long time. Like, no I’m just going to keep doing this. I’m going to keep running. We’ll just book out four, five or six months and the patients are going to have to wait. But as soon as I, in fact, it was about four or five times I said, “Bob I don’t think I’m ready. Let’s stop. Let’s not do that.”. And then I come back a week later and say, “Okay, how can you help me?” and then I’d say, “No, no, no, let’s stop. Let’s not”. But as soon as I finally just committed, I know I need it. I know I’ve got Bob on my team and I know he’s the guy that’s going to help me. And as soon as I let go and really let him guide this and take that reins, I wish I would’ve done it sooner.
